What is “There is a new Codec Pack version”?

However, updating the Adobe Flash player from questionable pages drops an installer that is bundled with malicious programs like SearchMine, GlobalAdviseSearch or MyCouponsmart adware. Usually, users get redirected to “There is a new Codec Pack version” when they click or visit any malicious page containing fake video streaming or download link. When visited, the site presents a full-page pop-up states that Flash player update is required with new version. It further tries to convince users by guiding about Flash player plugin that it is used to play various media contents of different formats on the web. When users click on the download button, it downloads “.dmg” extension file to the Mac system that further installs ad-supported program, adware, browser hijackers and even some malware. Pretending to be legitimate Adobe installer helps them to escape the security detection and get inside the system without much trouble.

However, users should avoid downloading the updates from any such unknown sites. There are various scam sites active on the web that may appear like a genuine Flash player update site, but it is just a fake page designed to download and install harmful software programs.

As mentioned above, the main motive behind this trick is drop PUAs that targets browsers like Safari, Chrome or Mozilla. Such programs are designed to silently alter the homepage, new tab and search engine with its own set of programs. Thus, users are not allowed to surf their own way and are forced to use third-party search engines to carry out their surfing. If you see these homepage active on your browser, it means your Mac is already infected with some potentially unwanted program.

Nonetheless to say that presence of such programs hampers the surfing, causes ruthless redirects and loads unpleasant advertisements. Even when users try to reset back to their default browser settings, it won’t allow to do so and appear again and again. The reason behind it, the PUAs are able to alter internal system settings and grant themselves administrative permissions.

How “There is a new Codec Pack version” Pop-ups Appear?

“There is a new Codec Pack version” redirect pages may appear on the browser unexpectedly. But it is not surprising if you get such pop-ups that asks you to update or download the latest version of Flash player. It mostly happens when user click on any malicious ads or visit any compromised website. Another reason behind the redirects is when the system is already infected with some adware or potentially unwanted program.

Most often the adware-type apps like AgileHelp, LogicalSearch, ProductTask and NeedWebSearch, FilterIdea and so on comes bundled with freeware downloads. These installers contains additional programs like web extensions, plug-ins, toolbars and any ad-driven tools. If user does not choose custom installation procedure then adware may get installed silently. Thus all the installed browsers whether Safari, Chrome or Mozilla may be controlled by any adware that further causes restricted surfing and redirects.
