The Web Notification

The Web notifications mostly appear in the form of pop-ups on your desktop screen, when you are not active on those websites or apps. Besides appearing on the top-right corner of your screen, it will also be in your “Notification Center” of Mac OS X, till you don’t open and read them.

When you click on the particular notification, your default browser redirects you to the website. Nowadays, most of the websites use web notification features, to keep their visitors connected.

Enable and Disable Web Notifications via Web Browsers

Safari:

Follow the steps carefully, to enable and disable the web notifications (Push notification) for websites:

  • Launch your safari browser by clicking on the “Safari Icon” from your Dock;
  • Now, click on the menu of the Safari that appears on top of the screen.
  • Then, select “Preferences”.
  • In the Preferences window, select the “Websites” tab. From the left sidebar, click on the “Notifications”.

  • Here, you will find the list of websites that are allowed to send push notifications. Each of the websites have a drop-down menu with options “deny”, “allow”. So, you can go through the list to specify your Safari to either send notifications from that particular site or not.
  • If you find the website completely unknown to you, then it is better to simply click on the “Remove” button that is at the bottom.

Google Chrome

Similarly, for Chrome browser, you can too manage the push notifications. And enable/ disable the notifications you no longer need.

To manage the web notifications on the Google Chrome Browser, follow these steps:

  • Launch your Chrome browser. Now head to the main menu by clicking on the three-dots appearing on the top-right corner .
  • Next, select “Settings” from the menu that appears. On the settings window, scroll down to the bottom and click on “Advanced”.
  • Then, under the “Privacy & Security” settings, click on “Content/site Settings”. Or type the URL on the address bar “chrome://settings/content/notifications

  • This will open all the list of websites active on the browser with the drop-down menu to choose “edit”, “remove” and “allow”.
  • You can now manage the websites that show you push notifications.

Mozilla Firefox

Like Safari & Chrome, the Mozilla Firefox browser too allows users to manage their web notification permissions.

To access the settings:

  • Click on the three-horizontal lines on the top-right corner.
  • Then select preferences/options from the menu. Or type the URL “about:preferences#privacy”.
  • Now, under the “Privacy & Security” menu, Scroll down to find the “Permissions” section.
  • Click on the “Settings” button next to the Notifications;

  • This will list the websites you have allowed to show push notifications. You will see an option as ‘Block new requests asking to allow notifications‘. By clicking on this option you can now disable the request from the websites that ask for notification service.
  • Click on “Save Changes

As mentioned above, the push notifications appear on the screen, and when we do not open them they stay in the “Notification Center” of the Mac OS.

The Notification center utility of the Mac OS allows you to manage the notifications from various applications along with web browsers. Also, it offers various options that help to easily enable/disable notifications from the apps and web browsers.

To do so: 

  • From the Apple menu, choose “System Preferences
  • Click on the “Notifications” panel;
  • Now, from the side menu appearing, click on the apps or web browsers, and in the center, choose/adjust the notification.
  • Click on the Safari and under the “alert style”, you can select “None” to disable the notification;

  • Also, you can uncheck the options “Show notifications on lock screen” and “Show in Notification Center”.
  • These settings will help you to disable the push notifications.
  • Similarly, you can do this for apps you don’t want to receive notifications.

After all these steps, it is very important to remove the potentially unwanted apps or websites that are triggering the annoying pop-ups. This step will clean your Mac and system, so as to permanently remove all traces of harmful programs.
