On Monday, Baidu the search giant announces to collaborate with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group to form a new self-driving car company.
According to the statement released, Baidu will be in charge of research and development, design, production and sales of the cars. While the mainland auto firm Geely, will focus on the manufacturing of the vehicle and other automobile capabilities.
To produce new self-driving vehicles, Baidu will use its “artificial intelligence and technology DNA” along using its self-driving car software, known as Apollo.
“At Baidu, we have long believed in the future of intelligent driving and have over the past decade invested heavily in artificial intelligence to build a portfolio of world-class self-driving services. China has become the world’s largest market for EVs, and we are seeing EV consumers demanding next-generation vehicles to be more intelligent.” said the Baidu CEO and cofounder Robin Li.
Baidu said that the new company will operate entirely distinct from its parent company. However, the new company will get empowerment from Baidu’s leading technologies like Baidu Map and Baidu IOV OS.
The Race To Reform the Self-driving Cars Continues Since 2019
However, this is not a new venture, the Baidu and Geely also came together
Prior to this new joint venture, Baidu and Geely along with Toyota and Apollo, joined hands to develop the open-source autonomous car technology and AI platforms.
This venture was formed in around July 2019, since then, Baidu has been working on the future of the next-gen cars. It is also rigorously testing its self-driving car software, known as Apollo. The company did many robotaxi trials in public across Beijing. Till now, the Apollo cars can perform all the driving tasks as well as monitor various driving environments based on some circumstances.
Despite these improvements, netizens have expressed their doubts and concerns on Weibo- china’s social networking platform.
As per the tech analyst Liu Dingding, he is said to be optimistic by the overall technology and strategy of Baidu’s self-driving intelligent cars.
“Time has arrived when the electric cars have received by policy and market support. For Baidu, it has advantages in already collected massive volumes of user data which may be applied in self-driving technologies. For Geely, it has what I think is China’s best electric vehicle manufacturing platform. This gives them at least a good start and strong basis in launching intelligent cars,” Liu told the Global Times.
By saying this, he also predicts that the search giant will continue its focus towards making of self-driving cars.
